AcupunctureACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture originated in China, where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional Western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world.

Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of “qi” – natural vitality. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness.

Some people turn to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. It can be safely used in pregnancy, including during the first trimester.

Michele Campling who offers the therapy at the Wellington Centre, says “I aim to achieve long-term change. It is human nature to stay where we feel comfortable, both physically and emotionally. Unfortunately this “norm” may be unhealthy. It is hard to change consciously but by re-aligning and relaxing clients at a very deep level, I aim to re-educate the bodymind to establish a healthy norm”.

On Thursday mornings, Michele is operating a Low-cost Acupuncture clinic. This is how Acupuncture tends to be practised in China and is a growing trend in the UK; we are pleased to be able to offer it for the first time In Hastings. Says Michele: ‘Your first consultation will take place in a private room but treatment itself is carried out in a large room with beds separated by screens. This enables us to keep costs low. However we use the same high-quality needles so that Acupuncture is gentle - and the beautiful room enhances the experience by providing a relaxing & meditative environment.’ Michele adds: ‘My first experience of clinical practice was as a Shiatsu practitioner working in a large room filled with futons. I always found this to be a nurturing & friendly environment, similar to the feeling you get in a good Yoga or T’ai Chi class’.
