ALLERGY/FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTING
Your favourite food may be affecting your health…
When we crave a food it may indicate that we have an intolerance to it. Allergy UK estimate that 45% of the UK population have an undiagnosed Food Intolerance and an estimated 50% of people with a Food Intolerance crave the foods their bodies cannot handle. If they don’t get a regular fix then they may suffer withdrawal symptoms often resulting in binge eating and weight gain.
A Food Intolerance is very different from a Food Allergy in that they both trigger different immune responses. A Food Allergy triggers instant response and can kill you (e.g. a peanut allergy/shellfish allergy). An Allergy generates the IGE immune response which is where the body mistakes the food as a harmful virus or bacteria and attacks it. This can be genetic, often appearing in childhood.
A Food Intolerance generates the IGG immune response which is due to the presence of certain trigger foods. Symptoms are less severe and may take an hour to several days to appear. A Food Intolerance may disrupt the metabolism triggering weight gain or weight loss. Where there is fluid retention, this is an indication that the body is not dealing well with a specific food which may result in excess weight. Research shows that our metabolism responds best to a variety of nutrients.
