What is Pilates?
Pilates has become enormously popular as a form of exercise: a regime of controlled movements and exercises which can spot-target problem areas in an extremely precise way As a result, benefits and changes can be seen and felt in a very short time.
We are delighted to welcome Glenda Petersen as Pilates Director of The Wellington Centre Pilates Studio. The first floor studio – with a beautiful outlook across Wellington Square and the sea –is the only fully-equipped Pilates Studio in the area.
Glenda offers Pilates in the Studio Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., and Saturday mornings by arrangement. To book, please call her on 07934-478602.
Here is a run-down of the many different benefits of Pilates, in addition to general body-shaping and strengthening.
Pilates for fitness
Pilates is excellent if you want to increase your general level of fitness without building big muscles. It is ideally suited for women who want to be firmer and look more shapely, but do not want to put on bulk. It will also help you to tone your body and look more slender and more balanced. This may be one of the reasons why Pilates gained popularity initially among professional dancers.
Pilates for sports
Doing sport competitively or just for fun keeps you fit. But many sports build up only certain muscles making your body imbalanced. Pilates helps you to bring neglected areas into harmony with the rest. By focusing on your individual needs, it helps you to achieve more. It increases your stamina and mobility, and helps you to prevent injuries.
Pilates for men
Men's body is built up differently from women's. Men tend to be more bulky, and their surface muscles are stronger. This often leads to a neglect of core muscles and a general tightness that limits their range of motion. These differences require a different strategy to training. While shifting emphasis from surface muscles to the core, sessions focus on stretching tendons and muscles, to alleviate any possible pains in the lower back, neck and shoulder.
Pilates for rehabilitation
Originally, the Pilates method was designed to help war veterans recover after the Great War. Joseph Pilates' first patients were soldiers who could not walk. Though Pilates has developed a great deal since then, its connection to its roots has remained as strong as ever. No matter what your condition, injury or pain is, Pilates can help. This is one of the reasons why physios often recommend it to their patients as complementary exercise.
The Wellington Centre is the only facility in the area to offer Pilates sessions on Pilates equipment (which includes several Reformers and Cadillac machines). You will exercise in this fabulous studio on state-of-the-art, specialised Pilates apparatus, utilising resistance provided by tensioned springs. Workouts are taught privately or in pairs, and tailored by our teachers to suit individual needs – whether you want help with recovery from an injury, to sleek your shape or to become more supple and flexible.
