Where to stay in Hastings

WHERE TO STAY

Hastings and St. Leonard’s are ‘happening’ – and we have lots of enquiries from people who’d like to visit The Wellington Centre for good places to stay. You won’t learn much from the local tourist info, so we’ve put together a shortlist of our top five recommended B & Bs and hotels – places we’d actually like to spend a night ourselves…

BLACK ROCK HOUSE

			An incredibly chic, five-star award-winning B & B near the Town Centre (less than 10 minutes’ walk from The Wellington Centre), in a quiet street. Gorgeous sea views, wonderful straight-out-of-an-interiors-mag décor, with ‘scrumptious breakfasts’, as The Sunday Times described them (featuring at least 60% local, sustainable produce). Rates: In summer, from £95-115 for a double up to £140 for the fabulous Westview suite (to accommodate two children), with a two-night minimum stay at the weekend; very slightly reduced in winter. (Sometimes bookings for a one-night stay at the weekend - at £125 for one night) can be made, by arrangement, if available.)

SWAN HOUSE

Featured in Condé Nast Traveller, The Sunday Times and The Good Hotel Guide 2009 (as well as just about every travel mag worth its salt), find this so-stylish five-star B & B in a quiet backstreet in the heart of Hastings Old Town, 10 minutes’ walk from us. The owners also have world-class self-catering accommodation elsewhere in the Old Town; contact them for details. Swan House is a croissant’s throw from Judges.
Rates: From £115 for the Garden Room to £145 for the magnificent Renaissance room (single occupancy also available); there’s a minimum two-night stay at weekends.

THE LAINDONS

Newly opened by a very chic and experienced restaurateur, at the quieter end of the High Street in the Old Town, this has already been awarded an AA five-star rating. Three gorgeous rooms, all with en suite bathrooms, Egyptian cotton sheets, White Company beauty goodies etc., and all done up with soft, cocooning, restful greys and off-whites. Rates:From £110-125 per night (currently no two-night minimum at weekends); single occupancy slightly lower. THE WHITE HOUSE

In an elevated position with incredible sea views and fab gourmet breakfasts, this Victorian pile has been given a design makeover, creating light, airy rooms and very grand, stylish living spaces. There are self-catering apartments, too. The White House is about 25 minute downhill walk to The Wellington Centre – but you might want to ask us to call you a cab to get back again, if you’re feeling t-o-o-o-o relaxed.
Rates: From £70-85 for a single to £120-145 for a sea view double; self-catering from £475 per week for two double bedrooms.

THE ZANZIBAR

			Last but absolutely not least, this seafront hotel in St. Leonard’s – a 10-minute walk along the seafront from the Centre - takes its inspiration from the continents, with spacious and stylish rooms (many with sea views) inspired and decorated with touches from Morocco, Africa, Japan etc. Might sound theme-park-y, but it’s stylishly done. Rates:From £99 for the Bali room to £215 per night for the Manhattan Penthouse suite (two-night minimum at weekends); single occupancy slightly lower. With the building of The Jerwood Gallery on the seafront in Hastings Old Town, we anticipate that other great places to stay will open up, and will add to this list as and when we find great new spots…
