THE LIGHT OF SUMMER! BY NADJA SEVERA
The longest day of the year, the summer solstice on June 21st when the sun is at its northernmost point in the sky, is the official start of summer. This is the season for more outdoor time and exercise enjoying the life giving energy of the sun which helps our immune system and to see the abundance of the colours of nature’s flowers and fruits. Best to stay out of the hottest time between 11a.m. and 3p.m. and use suitable organic sun protection and sunglasses. In the Chinese system the Fire element represents Summer and the peak time for the heart and small intestine.
Our body fluids are flowing freely now and it is the best time to enjoy the natural sunshine and fresh air to promote detoxification from the skin, our largest elimination organ. Sweating helps release toxins and pesticides from the body. Also a good time for an organic juicing with seasonal fruit and vegetables. Green being good for the liver and red for the blood.
Summer is a time to drink even more good quality water and plenty of raw food as seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables. Salad dressings should include olive oil, fresh lemon juice and lots of herbs. Try keeping the summer diet as light as possible using tofu, tempeh and sprouted seeds as an alternative to the denser animal protein and a good time to think about going vegetarian.
Late summer or an “Indian summer” is associated with the Earth element, the last 14 days of August is when our body fluids are flowing at their best and we should feel we have the most energy. The organs related to this time are the stomach, spleen and pancreas. It is wise to build up your essential fatty acid stores in readiness for Autumn.
Enjoy summer and indulge yourself with a summer holiday!
