Karen Ashdown

Exploring counselling for the first time, or even seeing a new counsellor, having been for some kind of therapy before can be daunting.

I aim to make it easier, offering a safe and relaxed therapeutic space in which you can, at your own pace, explore and work through anything in life that you perhaps are finding challenging.

I have an integrative approach so I embrace many styles of counselling and psychotherapy, depending on your needs/wishes though I believe that person centred therapy is particularly effective and empowering as it allows you, the client, to take the lead on your counselling journey. I can offer you confidential support, positive reinforcement and a safe space to explore possibilities moving forward with a greater degree of confidence, allowing for personal growth and achieving a calmer state of mind.

I have very complex personal experience of trauma beginning in childhood and the challenges that this can bring throughout life which I feel has added another layer to my academic credentials and allowed me to develop a whole new level of empathy and non-judgemental understanding. My life experiences have been one of my main motivations for training in counselling.

I too have been in a similar situation to the one you’re in today and sat in the chair you could be about to sit in and after the initial uncertainty, I believe it to be one of the best decisions I ever made. It certainly played an integral part in making me the person I am today.

I am a fully qualified and insured person centred counsellor with diplomas in counselling and psychotherapy, drug and alcohol counselling and stress management. I am also a member of the International Institute of Complimentary Therapists and I work to their ethical framework.

I can offer help working through the following areas;

Drug and alcohol counselling

I have a stand alone qualification in this area so should you just be feeling that you drink a little more than you would like and would like ideas on how to cut down, are a young person dabbling in certain drugs and worrying about peer pressure and feelings surrounding that or have acknowledged that you have a serious drink problem that is affecting life in many areas please do not suffer in silence, I am here and waiting to hear from you.

I offer counselling sessions of 50 minutes in length and my fee is £45 per session based at the Wellington Centre, usually on a weekly basis to start with. I can be flexible with the hours in which I work to include evenings and weekends but my main working day is Tuesday.

I would also like to offer an initial 20 minute session for £15 in which I will explain the ethical framework to which I adhere to and you can tell me a little about why you have decided to come for counselling and work out whether or not you feel you would like to go ahead. This can take place over the telephone if more convenient.
