Sarah Wingate

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I practice depth psychotherapy and counselling in London and Hastings. My approach is transpersonal integrative, which means that I tailor my therapeutic approach to my clients needs. I draw on different theoretical models including the psychodynamic model, Jung, Rogers, and Gestalt.

The transpersonal dimension is the deeper search for meaning, and is ultimately about connection to oneself, to others, and to the universe. It is often a lack of connectedness, felt as loneliness, that brings a person to therapy. For this reason the relationship with the therapist is key to the process of growth and healing, which I aim to promote by providing an empathic, calm, confidential environment.

I help clients gain a deeper understanding of their self by working through blocks and difficulties, exploring why these may have arisen, and how to learn and move on from them.

Sometimes what is needed is for people to rediscover their creativity in order to find solutions to their life challenges. I can help facilitate this through creative techniques such as visualisations, role play, and sand tray. I am interested in dreams and how they can provide special insight into our lives and internal processes, and work with clients dreams if they want to. I also offer meditation and mindfulness techniques.

Therapy can be either long or short term, although psychotherapy is usually longer term, and activates more of the clients potential, than counselling, which is often to do with specific, current, issues. Counselling can progress to psychotherapy, as the client engages in the process of self- development, which has been described as a feeling of 'Coming Home'.

Counselling experience

I have experience of working in a wide range of therapeutic settings, including The Caravan drop in, Help Counselling, Fresh Start psychotherapy, PBH coaching, transpersonal group work, and psychotherapy private practice in London and Hastings.

Past work experience

Before training as a psychotherapist I worked for 15 years as a mental health practitioner in various social care settings, including addictions rehabilitation, so I have a lot of practical experience and knowledge of mental distress in all its forms, and how a person's environment can impact on their mental health.
