Peter Purkiss

With over 20 years of experience working as a Therapist, my aim is to provide a safe, empathic and non-judgmental environment to work in, with the emphasis on the importance of the Therapist/Client relationship, in order to promote your desire for change.

We will explore and work together, towards promoting a deeper understanding of the challenges you may be facing at the moment and to encourage a deeper sense of self and feelings of self-empowerment, confidence and help develop your sense of creativity.

I began working in residential drug and alcohol treatment over twenty years ago and have many years of experience working with people who face substance misuse, alcohol dependency and addiction issues; addiction being defined as “anything that gives you temporary relief and temporary pleasure, but in the long term causes harm and has negative consequences that cannot easily be given up despite those negative consequences”. This includes all the behavioural addictions such as gambling, workaholism, eating disorders, codependency, sex addiction, addiction to social media and technology, etc. I also work with clients facing a wide range of issues including relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, cultural and identity issues, ADD/ADHD, autistic spectrum, trauma and post-traumatic stress, health issues, sexual identity, spirituality. I am especially interested In how childhood trauma influences our adult experiences and relationships, and work to further a better understanding of our subconscious processes and the links between childhood trauma and current difficulties. I qualified as a Psychotherapeutic Therapist in 2002 and have worked in both private practice and the charity sector at the Rock Clinic in Brighton, Youth Advice Centre (YAC), and as a Student Counsellor at Sussex University for a number of years.
